WHAT MORFUDD’S DRINKING

Ever since I was fortunate enough to visit Domaine Huet in the Loire many years ago I have been

bewitched by the power and elegance of a fine Chenin blanc, so at a recent H2Vin tasting I was excited to

discover this Chenin blanc ‘Weathered Hands’ from Dewalt Heyns in Swartzland South Africa

The vineyards are planted in the Paardeburg valley, the home of some of South Africa’s most exciting

wineries, many of whom embrace the reputation of the maverick, un-trellised old vines and biodynamic

farming. Lying on the granitic slopes of the Paardeburg, the landscape is dominated by sprawling wheat

fields and patches of vineyard where many of the producers embrace that occupation of being, first and

foremost, farmers. The name of this wine ‘Weathered Hands’ is testament to this farming heritage.

Weathered Hands is made from old bush vines from the oldest vineyards on Dewaldt’s father’s

farm of just over a hectare. What I love about Chenin is that even in warmer climates it retains this acidity,

this backbone of zestiness that allows its flamboyant flavours to express themselves without running riot.

Dewalt has taken an Old World approach to ensure this balance with the grapes being hand harvested in the

mornings to retain freshness and acidity. The wine is a gorgeous expression of peach, white pear, a lovely

ginger spiciness together with notes of baked apple; some barrel ageing adds subtle oak flavours without

being overpowering. It retains its freshness and liveliness whilst being silky and creamy. Absolutely delish

and brilliant with our Chicken Schnitzel and Crab linguini or just on its bloomin’ own!
